Bold Landscapes in Pastel with Ed Kennedy

In the class we will explore how to simplify your subject, group masses and values and discuss the four basic planes in a landscape (sky, ground, slanted and upright planes) and how it will impact your painting.  We will also discuss foreground, middle and background and how it helps create atmospheric perspective and depth in your painting.  Specific to pastel, we will review how to apply pastel to the paper, blending or mixing colors, color/temperature and the most important concept: “touch”.  Students are encouraged to experiment as this is intended to be a learning experience.

Supplies available Art Supply Depo or bring what you have!
Pastels:  A good general set of pastels that has a good color and value range is beneficial.  There are several landscape sets available in 1/2 stick or full sticks.  Half stick sets are an economical way to explore pastel.  Rembrandt and Sennelier make 1/2 stick sets geared toward landscape painting.  If students already own pastels then they should just bring what they have.  I use Rembrandt, Unison, Schminke, Girault, Great American, Mount Vision and Nupastel.
Paper: Sanded pastel paper. Ed uses UArt 500 grit paper.  Other suggested brands are Pastel Premier (course grit), Sennelier LaCart. Ampersand pastel board, Pastel Mat, etc.  We  recommend two (2) sheets of 9 x 12 size paper for this class.   Paper also available at the Depo 🙂
Notepad/Sketchbook:  A notepad or sketchbook for taking notes and doing a value sketch or study would be beneficial.
